As if the Thomas fire wasn't devastating enough to Santa Barbara, the mudslides in January were worse. We became a town of warnings, evacuations, fire, smoke, homes lost, deaths, then rain, then mud, then more homes lost and then unimaginable deaths of those in nearby Montecito. Our town was on autopilot just going through the motions. Holiday activities that had been postponed due to the fires had now either been canceled entirely or like Detar Music, rescheduled to try and bring some normalcy to the situation.
The holiday recital definitely wasn't the same. For one, Todd wasn't able to be there because with the 101 freeway shut down indefinitely with mud, he was staying down south to be near his job location commuting home when he could via the train. And the train wasn't on a regular schedule, it didn't have room for the amount of people trying to go back and forth and most importantly, First Responders had priority to get on board, as they should.
So, I took these two down to Soho and changed our table reservation from four to three.
Thatcher LOVES to be on stage. I am not sure how much practicing happened during the month leading up to the performance but Thatcher is so confident performing in front of others that he could of sat down and played nothing and would have expected applause. Sam, on the other hand, likes to be prepared, likes to know her music and wasn't feeling so confident. Gus likes the kids to memorize their performances for recitals but an exception was made for Sam under the circumstances so her piano book was going to be coming on stage.
Having friends at your performance helps! Again, Thatcher feeling very confident and Sam holding on for dear life to her book.
Lolo became our #4.
A team of First Responders came up at the start of the show so that the crowd could show their support and thank them for all they had done the past month with the Thomas fire and now the Montecito mudslides. You can see that some of them were in muddy boots because round the clock there were teams of fire fighters digging in the mud to hopefully find those that were still missing.
It set the tone for a beautiful night and it felt like the crowd was extra attentive to the kids playing music and doing the best they could.
Thatcher began to show signs of nervousness.
Nope, false alarm.
As always, sweet Sofia knocked it out of the park.
Thatcher would have gone again if it were an option.
Samantha memorized her piece after all so the book was just a safety net.
Thank you Gus and Detar Music!
And just for fun, here's Gus playing for us at the piano lesson following the recital. My kids are close to sounding like that, right?
