School Happenings

Samantha is happy to be back at school as a first grader!

Here's Charlotte and Samantha having a hula hooping contest before the morning bell rings.

These two started to develop a crowd around them watching to see who would drop the hula hoop first.

They went until the bell rang and called it a tie!

Thatcher and I love joining Samantha for lunch. This particular day was Pizza Friday!

Besides getting to be on a bigger playground in first grade, another perk is getting to sit wherever you want during lunch.

This is where some of the first grade girls like to eat. I was told, no boys allowed. Fine with me.

Thatcher was feeling a little unwelcome by the girls and headed over to where the boys eat.

Friday is also $1 ice cream day, a fundraiser, of course. So, Fridays begin with cinnamon rolls then pizza and then ice cream. I will say, the cinnamon rolls and pizza are whole-wheat so they are kinda healthy, kind of….

Samantha chose to do the Dance and Drama after-school class for fall quarter.

Steven Lovelace of Santa Barbara Dance Arts is the Peabody dance teacher who does an amazing job with the kids.

Samantha's buddy Claire is also in the class.

Off to a good start with reading and spelling.

Pretty water color butterfly art.

We are so happy with Samantha's teachers this year. Every single worksheet she turns in comes back with feedback, even if it is just a "good!" or a star, it's nice to know they are taking the time to acknowledge her work. They even caught that she spelled her name wrong ;)

Those riddles were left blank because mom and dad couldn't figure out with they were asking for ;)

Last year in Kindergarten we were notified that Samantha's artwork was chosen for the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum art show by Peabody's ceramics teacher, Mrs. Pinner. The show was this past weekend and we couldn't have been more proud of Samantha.

Only 10 students from each of the city schools were picked.

"Snails on a Leaf"

So proud of our first grader! It is going to be a great year!

And then there is Thatcher…. This note made me laugh. It is typical Thatcher. I know that he is a bit wild at preschool. His class is very boy-heavy and there are a group of them that are notorious for just being boys all. day. long. I am sure it is exhausting for the preschool teachers. Hey, that is why I am not one ;)

One thing that we have noticed so far this year is the art work he is bringing home. He rarely brought any home last year and when I asked Ms. Katie she said honestly he never would sit down and focus long enough to do any. So as you can see, a definite improvement! We can actually tell this is a rainbow!

"Waffles"

"A Roller Coaster"

I snuck up on him at lunch and snapped this picture.

You can see from Ms. Laurie's lunch bench, there are 7 boys and just 3 girls.

Thankfully this little lady, Jessie, has also contributed to calming our little guy down. The teachers have all said he is very protective and sweet to her.

Another big milestone, Thatcher can spell his name. Ask him next time you see him, he will be happy to tell you ;) I am sure he would have been able to do this sooner but I have to cut him some slack as it isn't the easiest name to spell. We found ourselves spelling it wrong when we kept having him repeat the letters to us. "T-H-A-T-C-H-E-R….T-C-A-T-H-E-R…no wait…T-H-A-T-C-H-E-R….T-C-A..."and so on and so on. Seriously, spell his name over and over and you will get it mixed up too. Or else we just need to go back to preschool.

Here's Thatcher singing some preschool songs and of course, spelling his name.

Samantha's Personal Bank Account

Between the tooth fairy, allowance (we give quarters for over and above "normal" chores) and the occasional buck or two for extra curricular activity success (we've been known to pay for soccer goals and the like), Samantha has acquired a fair amount of coins and dollar bills. She can do whatever she wants with this money and has. She can go buy junk  stuff at Claire's, feed the video game machines at pizza places or partake in $1 ice cream Fridays at school. I recently suggested that she open her own account and keep her money in the bank as there are too many times I see random dollar bills on the floor in her room or a pile of change in a toy basket. It took some explanation and a lot of convincing to get her to want to "give" her money to the bank. "What if they lose it?" "What if a robber steals it?" "How will the bank know which exact dollar bills are mine?" (that was a biggie for her as she really wanted to make sure the EXACT dollar bill she deposited was the one she would get back which had me going down the road of why money is so dirty!) "Where does the money go?" "Wait, tell me again why don't I just keep my money here?"

Here we are at the bank opening an account and after comprehending that the sparkly five dollar bill she got for losing her first tooth would not be the same $5 bill upon withdrawal, it went back in her wallet.

She reluctantly handed over what she was willing to part with.

And this smile is because they would not take the gigantic pile of change she brought in without her coin wrapping it first so she was excited for her chore to do at home and even asked if I would pay her to do it?! Um, no!

The Kidz Savings Bonus Card was an incentive to fork over her $34. Now every time she makes a deposit she will get points towards fun rewards like movie tickets or Toys R' Us gift cards.

Equally excited for her bank pen. (A good reminder how little it takes to excite a six-year-old).

It was taking some time to set up the account with all the paperwork and when I looked over she appeared suddenly much older holding a coffee cup full of water….

Okay enough of that, back to being 6!

Making her first deposit with the teller.

Hooray for her new account and hopefully detouring her from wasting her money on pizza parlor video games!

Valerie and David

My dear friend and colleague, Valerie, was married a few weekends ago at the Santa Barbara Courthouse in the Mural Room. Check out this cute couple on their wedding website: http://www.valerieanddavid.com

Excited to be at a wedding, our second this year!

Valerie looked AMAZING! David did too ;)  Their ceremony was filled with laughter, happy tears and personalized to include both of their families in such a special way.

Just married!

There were a few hours in between the ceremony and the reception so we went to the top of the courthouse where there is a spectacular 360 degree view of Santa Barbara.

We were so happy to be hanging with Nick and Maria, our friends from way back when. Nick actually married me and Todd nine years ago!

After a little pre-party at Cielito, we headed over to The Creekside for the reception, which by the way, The Creekside and wedding reception don't really go hand and hand given its dive bar status however they transformed the place and the woodsy outdoor area with twinkling lights was magical. It was perfect! Not to mention that it was catered by the next door restaurant, The Bourbon Room. Yum! AND, lucky us, the Southern Belle was back in Santa Barbara. It's cold up in San Francisco, Holley, real cold (and foggy). Don't forget us here!

Beautiful toasts including Val's brother singing a song to his sister that was awesome. It was very Jimmy Fallon-esque and had us all laughing/crying and singing along.

My favs!

Todd and Russ

The Groom and Father-of-the-Groom!

How cute are they?!

Valerie's brother's band played some of the music that night and I am pretty sure they are singing "Say It Ain't So" by Weezer right here.

Valerie's new sister-in-law and a late night wedding dress change!

Todd hitting up the late night food they brought out, Bourbon Room Sloppy Joe's!

I had to snag some of the sneak peak shots from Facebook.

Congrats David and Valerie aka #validlove
