Peabody takes first graders on an overnight "glamping" trip to El Capitan at the end of the year. I don't know many schools that do an overnight trip this young. This is definitely pretty unique and special, something the kids look forward to all year (and the parents, if you are lucky enough to be chosen as a chaperone)
I went with Samantha when she was in first grade and Todd took Thatcher this year.
Not excited at all.
Jethro was Todd's co-chaparone and I am pretty sure Jethro was as good as any of the hired guides they had that weekend with his outdoorsy lifestyle.
Pointing out poison oak.
More poison oak.
More!
Mugwort: What you rub on yourself if you think you have poison oak to counteract it. (believe it or not, their group remained poison oak free, not sure about the others)
The year that I went with Samantha, was the year of the oil spill at Refugio State Beach which happened about a week before we arrived. So, Thatcher got to do a little more exploring than Samantha did her year. We weren't allowed to go near the beach.
Bio-nature talk.
Archeology presentation.
Yoga.
Storyteller.
Video: Happy Birthday to me!
Can you tell which two campers had the most energy in their group?
Samantha's year, that ocean was black with oil! So glad it has recovered.
They survived!
