Thatcher Lost a Tooth!

Around the age of two, Thatcher took a really bad fall in our front yard and caught himself using his teeth on the cement. There was a lot of blood and a lot of loose teeth. The dentist said they were either going to fall out OR they could tighten back up. We were lucky because the latter happened.

A few months ago, Thatcher was balancing on a toy truck in the Kids' Club at the gym and he slipped and fell catching himself on a cement floor with his teeth. This time, they aren't tightening up. The first one came out a few weeks ago.  :(

I forget where we were coming home from but it had been hanging for several weeks and it finally came out in the car.

Naturally, he is thrilled with losing a tooth and can't stop showing the world.

Samantha didn't lose her first tooth until she was five-years-old and even then it was pulled by the dentist. So her first REAL visit from the Tooth Fairy wasn't until she was SIX! There are actually kids in Sam's first grade class who are seven and haven't even lost a tooth!

We are prepared for more holes in this smile to happen soon as he has at least FIVE more wiggly teeth, top AND bottom.

We need to teach this kid to put his hands out when he falls!

Early morning riser when he knows there is money to be had under his pillow ;)

Thatcher's 1st Dentist Appointment

Thatcher had his first dentist appointment this week.  This kid loves going to the doctor so you can imagine the excitement leading up to his appointment.  There were lots of questions and anticipation as to what treasure he would be picking out of the prize cabinet at Dr. Lyman's office.

"Cheese, look at my shiny teeth!"

"Too bright!"

"What are you doing Dr. Lyman?"

The kicker was Thatcher at first refused the new toothbrush Dr. Lyman offered him because he said he'd rather have something from the treasure cabinet.  Lucky you, Thatch, you get both! ;)    And I should note that he got an excellent report just like his sister did when she was his age on her first visit.  Let's just hope those good reports continue when they start to take x-rays ;)

One happy boy with a new toothbrush AND a dinosaur key chain!

The Tooth Fairy Visited!

Samantha lost her first tooth but it wasn't the way we thought she would have lost her first tooth...

It was an extraction by the dentist.  Long story short, last year she cracked one of her molars when eating a nut and it caused damage all the way to the roots and it began to die. We had two choices, a root canal or extract it.  We went for the extraction.

And have you ever seen someone so happy to get an extraction??  Not only did she get a tooth pulled, she had to get a cavity filled too.  I was really proud of her, she did awesome! She did wince a little bit when getting the Novocaine shots and I think the sound of the drill scared her but the laughing gas they administered kept her calm.  I think I am the one who needed the laughing gas because I had a front row seat for the entire procedure and watching (and hearing) a tooth get pulled was not fun.

All swollen and numb.

The tooth fairy left some fairy dust

and a sparkly five dollar bill! (note: the going rate for the subsequent teeth she loses will be significantly less especially considering the dental bill we now have.....)

The new tooth will not come in until she is about 10 years old,

so she will have to get a metal space maintainer to hold that space so her teeth don't move. :(

CHEESE!

And yes, mid-appointment I blurted out that I'd take her to the toy store. After seeing/hearing the tooth get pulled I couldn't help it.  So far she has no loose teeth so the tooth fairy is hanging up her wings for now but not for long I am sure considering all the five-year-olds I see with missing teeth.

Big Girl Dentist

It was time for another dental check-up for Samantha and I decided to have her go to our dentist instead of the pediatric one we normally take her to. Samantha has always done great at the dentist and really doesn't need all the bells and whistles they go through for the little kids plus we were paying almost 3 times as much for that service.  I had talked to our dental office the last time I was there and they said they treat young children all the time.  And they have strawberry flavored fluoride at our dentist too!

Getting her cleaning from the hygienist.

Thatcher was totally intrigued.

Say, "Ahhhhhhh"

Now BIG smile!

Thatcher will have no trouble seeing the dentist when it is his turn.

All ten teeth were polished, cleaned and given a fluoride treatment.

Dr. Cowan came over and did a thorough examination and was impressed by how nice her teeth looked.

Meanwhile, Thatcher was obsessed with moving the chair up and down and pushing buttons.  Everyone in the office was so nice and didn't mind Thatcher's curiosity (a nice way of saying misbehavior).  ;)

The staff brought out a treasure chest of goodies which held Thatcher's attention for the rest of the appointment.

Both kids left with overflowing goodie bags which Samantha was quick to notice was filled with a lot more stuff than the last dentist.

Lucky kids!
