TK Camp

A few weeks ago Samantha attended TK (Transitional Kindergarten) Camp at Adams Elementary.  The camp was designed to get the TK and K students acclimated with their new school before the school year officially started.

Here is Samantha with her new teacher for the school year, Ms. Trainer.  She was very sweet and excited to be teaching TK.  The students, a combo of Peabody Charter and Adams Elementary, will have their own classroom of just TK students which are children whose 5th birth dates fall between 9/2 and 12/2 of this year (those birth dates that fall between 11/2 and 12/2 do not qualify for K which is where Sam fits in).  For the camp, both K and TK were combined in one class so that everyone could get to know each other.  It worked out great for Sam because her friend Luke is in the TK class and will also transition to Peabody for K.

It was a bit of a challenge getting to school every day, normally she only goes three days a week.  I know that once we get into the routine we will adjust better.  I also think that with the longer day at school we might have to drop her nap (gasp!).  Somehow my 4 1/2 year old is still taking a daily 3 hour nap while most of her friends her age have scaled back or no longer take one.  Heck, her 2-year old brother takes shorter naps and has skipped more naps than she has.  This girl loves her sleep!

The camp was filled with lots of art work, games, playtime and story time.

We are still working on getting Samantha to make sure she writes in the correct direction.  Mirror writing is common in lefty's.  I say she is gifted ;)  Don't Google "mirror writing", you get all sorts of crazy explanations as to why she is writing this way..... Again, I say she is gifted ;)

I love that they do worksheets, letters, numbers, etc.  While I get that this age should be focused on "play", Samantha has been craving more learning like this.  We do it at home, she gets a little of it at preschool but having actual school work at school will keep Samantha interested.

I have kept a spot at Sam's preschool in case she isn't happy (or we are not happy) with TK but I am pretty confidant with what she experienced at the camp, the friends she met and her teacher, that we will be just fine.  Samantha is finishing up her last week of preschool as I type this and most of her close friends are no longer there.  The summer session has been really quiet.  Many of her friends have moved, some opted to take a break during the summer, others did various summer camps and most of her group has graduated.  The school is down to just two picnic tables of kids for lunch when normally there are four.  I think this has helped Sam with her transition of wanting to move on to something else, something more challenging.  She also knows that her brother will be going to the same preschool early next year so she will still get to come visit.

We had a celebratory lunch after her first day.  Natural Cafe spaghetti was her pick!

I tried my best to get the two of these to take a photo together.

A normal photo that is....

Guess this will have to do!

We are so proud of you Sammy and are looking forward to your first day which is coming up real soon!

Goodbye to the Stone Family Part II

A few days after the Bon Voyage party we got to watch the Stone kids for the evening while their parents went to a going away party thrown by Chris' company.

Thatcher got to spend some quality time with his main squeeze.

He fed her snacks.

Tried to make out with her.

And when it wasn't well received, he just started to eat the snacks himself.  Better luck next time Thatch.

Uncle Todd saved Jessie from lover boy and tried his best to impress her as well.

"Look Jess, I can hold a lemon with just the tip of my finger!"

She's not impressed.....

Maybe just a little ;)

Next Todd did a little walking boot camp.

Nice work Jess!

Once she saw that Punky Brewster was on TV she was no longer interested.

I don't blame her.  Punky Power always takes priority in our household!

Three best buddies

Silly!

I am not sure if it is Todd or that sling (maybe both?)

But Jessica was fast asleep for the Stones when they got back.

Connor and Samantha got to have one last sleepover.

The next night Holley hosted a casual BBQ to have one final send off.

One last hug goodbye!

So we thought......

The Strong Family got new merchandise for their Gwendolyn Strong Foundation Store and our families got to be the models for the gear.  We didn't think Connor was going to be able to make it but it worked out that he got to come with Holley while his parents got some last minute things ready for their trip.

I love that we got some professional photos of this cute crew together before they really left.  And how cute are these shirts?!  All the new GSF gear is really awesome  - you can see more photos and shop here.

We miss the Stones so much already.  We've been exchanging emails and have Skyped (which Samantha refers to as "Sprite-ing.").  My kiddos are still a bit confused as to where they went.  Thatcher is really confused because he thinks they went off to college..... He also thinks his buddy Jack, who has been in Hawaii for the summer, has been at Trader Joe's this whole time.

Looking forward to more "Sprite" sessions so that we can see you all again very soon!

Goodbye to the Stone Family

A couple weeks ago we said goodbye to the Stone family.  Laurie and I have been friends for 15 years. Best friends!  Their kids and our kids are really, REALLY close buddies.  Connor and Samantha go to preschool together and for the past 4 years we have lived just a few short blocks from them.  We have a lot of great memories together with their family.  And now they are off on a 2 1/2 year adventure living in Holland.

Here are some of my favorite candid shots through the years:

This last photo is from the Bon Voyage party we threw the Stones.  Marina, Holley, and Laurie posted pictures and details of the wonderful time we all had.

Lucky for us we got to spend a few more days together - more photos to come!
